Commitment.

Every woman wants it. Men can't even spell it.

Ray makes the move. Jane feels the rush. Ray says the L-word. Jane breaks her lease. Then suddenly, inexplicably, he dumps her. Just. Like. That.

Now black is the only color in Jane's closet and Kleenex is clinging to her nose. Why did it happen? How could it have happened?

Jane is going to get an answer. Not from Ray. Not from her best friends, David and Joan. But from an astounding new discovery of her own: The Old-Cow-New-Cow theory. Forced to move into the apartment of a womanizing alpha male named Eddie, Jane is seeing the world of men and women in a brilliant new light. And when she takes her Old-Cow-New-Cow theory public, it will change her career and her whole life. Unless, of course, she's got it all wrong...

Eventually, I plan to release this book in the wild. But I’d like for it to travel a bit first, so that whoever picks it up later can read about its exciting adventures and what others thought of it.

So here are the rules:

+ Journal when you’ve received the book (so we know it’s not lost).
+ Journal when you’ve finished the book (let us know what you thought).
+ PM the person whose name appears next on the list for their mailing address and send them the book! (If you're the last name on the list, PM me for my address.) And don't forget to make another journal entry to let us know it's been sent to the next ring participant!

Also, if you'd like, please “autograph” the back cover of the book with your screen name, city, and state/country, so whoever “catches” this book later can learn a little about its history, even if he or she chooses not to visit the Book Crossing site.

Final Mailing Order:

  • fsr44 (Pawtucket, R.I.)
  • LaurieS (Merrimack, N.H.)
  • mysteryfan03 (Moberly, Mo.)
  • hengameh (Tehran, Iran)
  • Katayoun (Tehran, Iran)
  • BecFromMD (Atlanta, Ga.)
  • Wyldanthem (back to me for a wild release!)

9 out of 10

Despite the many dissimilarities between print and screen, this is the book that inspired the movie Someone Like You (starring vivacious Ashley Judd, delectable Hugh Jackman, yummy Greg Kinnear). I enjoyed the movie a lot (and its cast, if you couldn’t tell), but I still think the book was better.

I’m still absolutely floored by Jane Hamilton’s (TV talent booker, not the ape lover) Old-Cow-New-Cow Theory, and have a few friends who are ardent believers in its verity. I admit that when you’re recovering from a bad breakup, it’s comforting to think that the end of your relationship had nothing to do with you, but rather could be attributed to his (or her, as the case might be) inherent biological makeup. Your significant other didn’t leave you because of a more attractive person or because you were growing apart -- nature dictated this action; it’s perfectly natural! But it’s just not so.

As entertaining as this story was (and as thought provoking as the Old-Cow-New-Cow Theory is), I’m still not convinced of its accuracy. Among intellectual creatures, such as humans, monogamy is a choice. Men and women alike can choose to be monogamous or choose not to be monogamous. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with either choice, but rather pointing out that a choice is made. We’re not on the same level as cows, and what’s acceptable behavior to them doesn’t necessarily need to be considered as acceptable behavior to us. Not to be crude, but if we as a species have enough self-restraint not to urinate where ever we please, we can exercise the same discipline when it comes to cheating.

Animal Husbandry arrived today but I won't be able to get to it as soon as I had hoped because two review books and two ring books arrived earlier this week. I'll do my best to get it read as soon as I can and will update my main page with my reads in progress so you can check my status. Feel free to give me a polite "Move it!" if you think I'm taking too long because my life sometimes gets very hectic ;)

Released on Monday, February 23, 2004 at Bookray in n/a, Bookray Controlled Releases.

I have gotten in way over my head and life is extremely hectic and I know I will never get this read in a timely manner. I apologize for delaying the book by having it sent to me. I didn't realize everything would arrive at once (my review books, several rays, school projects, etc). In order to prevent becoming a "bookray big black hole" :) I'm going to pass this along to the next in line. HOpefully, I'll be in a better place later on if a kind bc-er would like to bump me along a few notches. Sending to mysteryfan03 . Enjoy the book!

This was a fun read. I wasnt too sure about it at first, but the story does not take itself seriously and becomes even funnier as it progresses, even tho some of it rings true. I did not see the movie. Thanks for an enjoyable book!! This will be on its way to Iran soon.

5 out of 10

I was not impressed with this book. I did not find the main character, Jane, sympathetic at all. I couldn't muster any respect for her. About three-quarters of the way in , I started to like her a little bit, but by then it was too late to redeem the book. And I thought the vignettes at the beginning of each chapter were just annoying. I'll bring it with me to the next meetup at St. Elmo's next month.
