Original title: The Last Family in England. I guess Americans would be too self-centered to go for that.

The premise of this story is that dogs had a mission to protect and serve their human masters, but now only the Labradors remain committed while other breeds think their ideals are outdated or even ridiculous. Narrated from the POV of the family dog, Prince, the novel follows the Hunter family, outwardly the epitome of the perfect nuclear family with a mother, father, son and daughter. The kids are embroiled in the struggles of adolescence and the parents' relationship has become jaded, leaving each member of the family vulnerable to outside influences that Prince feels duty-bound to handle.

Similar to Haig's other novel, The Radleys, the story is about the turbulence in maintaining a functioning family, and that perfect, normal and healthy are unrealistic. You don't have to be a Labrador to want the best for your family, even when the best is painfully relative.

Thank you! A wishlist book combined with great HGG presents! My Megan will adore the little faces on her rice balls that mom is going to make for her bento box lunches. I am amazed that you read my wishlist or posts and knew this would be a wonderful gift.
