I first read about these characters in Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Official Casebook, which turned out to be a collection of short stories by a variety of authors/artists. Some of them were quite good, but most were pretty much just snippets of humor based on a knowledge of the game. Still, I found the character of Miles Edgeworth quite interesting - he's one of the prosecuting attorneys and is Phoenix Wright's main rival (and one-time childhood friend), and his brooding-perfectionist traits contrast nicely with Phoenix's goofball side. This manga series is by a single author/artist pair, and is reportedly more faithful to the game (and with more cohesive stories), so I thought I'd give it a try.
Turns out I enjoyed these stories, from the comic relief of sidekick detective Dick Gumshoe (yeah, that's his name!) to the blunt/perfectionist style of Miles himself. When we first see Edgeworth, he walks in with his trademark frilly neckcloth all aflutter - and then is led to a bloody crime scene, a hotel bathroom where one of the attendees of a high-end-tea gathering has been brutally stabbed. While the hotel is crammed with people attending other gatherings, including a masquerade-afficionado group (lots of opportunities for masks, y'see), the suspect list gets narrowed down pretty early. But (surprise!) there's a twist... (There's also a funny bit at the end of the story where Miles' typical outfit gets mistaken for a costume, much to his annoyance.)
The second, and longer, story involves murder at a rock concert - not a setting in which Edgeworth is very happy, but Gumshoe loves the band, and is devastated by the crime. And that's not all that poor Gumshoe has to put up with in this one...
The bonus material includes a funny little story of the mangaka having to call in Edgeworth and Gumshoe to solve the mystery of the missing manuscript.
Funny, lively, and with some interesting twists to the mysteries - I like this series!
[There's a TV Tropes page for the visual novels and games.]
