I'm not sure I've ever read anything by Beryl Bainbridge yet she's such a well-known British author. This is only a relatively short book so on to Mount TBR it goes!

A book from my wishlist, given to me at yesterday's meeting. Thanks, bookguide!
Blurb: Freda and Brenda spend their days working in an Italian-run wine-bottling factory. A work outing offers promise for Freda and terror for Brenda; passions run high on that chilly day of freedom, and life after the outing never returns to normal.
It took me a long time to get into this story and half way through I was tempted to put this novel aside altogether. I didnot like the characters nor the gloomy and depressed atmosphere. I found the story downright boring. But then their was a bizarre twist in the tale and the pace picked up somewhat, so I did make it to the last page. I don't think I'll be reading any other Beryl Bainbridge novels, though.
