Wonderful find from my holiday in Greece. On the narrow alleys of the old town in Rethymnon I found a bookshop with good English selection and was really happy to spot my wishlist books by Hislop on their shelves.
A paperback by Headline Publishing Group, 2013, 176 pages.
Synopsis:
"In ten powerful stories, Victoria Hislop takes us through the streets of Athens and into the tree-lined squares of Greek villages. As she evokes their distinct atmosphere, she brings vividly to life a host of unforgettable characters, from a lonesome priest to battling brothers, and from an unwanted stranger to a groom troubled by music and memory.
These bittersweet tales of love and loyalty, of separation and reconciliation, captured in Victoria Hislop's unique voice, will stay with you long after you reach the end."

I usually am not a huge fan of short stories but I thoroughly enjoyed these. Hislop succeeds both with joys and sorrows, her writing style wakes up traditions and and is filled with emotion. The stories also skillfully reflected some of the current tensions in Greece's political environment. Great to read these small pieces of Greece just after enjoying a week of Greek hospitality.

Valtavasti kiitoksia, Bookgeo! Pienistä tarinoista oli suuri ilo! Kirja on varattu seuraavalle toivojalle.

These were captivating stories indeed, I really enjoyed them! It was as I had visited Greece myself and met these interesting people while reading this book. Hislop has a great talent to describe the atmospheres of the Greek villages. I liked the way Hislop brings together the history of Greece with the current political tensions and problems of the country. I liked all the novels, but was most amused with 'The Kafenion' - as a mother of two sons I really could feel the jealousy between the twin brothers :)

Looks lovely, thank you!
Enjoyable glimpses into life in Greece outside the tourist destinations. Brief and simple, sometimes too simple to my liking, but perfect holiday reading nevertheless.
