Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher lead an ordered sushi-and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: he a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegals Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine. And from the moment a freak accident brings Candido and Delaney into intimate contact, these four and their opposing worlds gradually intersect in what becomes a tragicomedy of error and misunderstanding.

Tortilla Curtain is used when describing the thin borders between Mexico and the United States which immigrants cross over in their attempt to live better lives. Using his excellent skills with words, Boyle has constructed very lively characters in (partly) extreme circumstances and a well-designed plot. However, I cannot say that I liked the characters.

Caught at the July 2013 Berlin meetup, enjoying a lovely evening in the beer-garden Eschenbräu. - I don't know what I expected, but not this very intense and sad story. I'm afraid, the characters and the confrontation of desperate mexican immigrants vs. liberal naive US citicens is quite real.

bought this book today from a semi-professional bookseller on Mauerpark fleamarket. I did get a handwritten bookmark from the vendor that says:

"glaeubiges Vertrauen ist eine Oase im Herzen,
die von der Karawane des Denkens nie erreicht werden wird"
Khalil Gibran
