When cleaning lady Lily Bard discovers the dead body of her nosy landlord, her plan of starting a quiet new life may end in her death.

It took me too long to read this book. I don’t exactly know why. There is no much detecting being done and the main character Lily Bard somehow irritated me. She is so tough living her lonely life after the brutal crime in her past. At the same time I found her personality rather interesting. So maybe I’ll read the next one in this series.

Thanks! I don't know the rules of Sanatarkkaan, but I'm no landlord nor Shakespeare... Haven't read any of this series before, but always willing to try new cozy mysteries.

Journal Entry 7 by wingkirjakkowing at Helsinki, Uusimaa / Nyland Finland on Saturday, January 18, 2014
Cozy isn't a word I would use describing this book. I do not like sadistic violence described in detail. Not only because it's not enjoyable reading, but also because somewhere there might be that sick weirdo who will get ideas. And also because I believe that feeding us acts of violence in forms of entertaining films or books makes us more numb towards it.
The heroine here felt like a cross between Agatha Raisin and Lisbet Salander. I have to say that the identity of the murderer was not clear to me until towards the very end (making me suspicious of everybody does not count), which is a plus side, as I consider miself quite a good Miss Marple.
This book made me remember a young girl I used to know. She had two dogs so that she could sleep. When she was twelve, her mother had tried to kill her with a kitchen knife. The mother had had some sort of mental problems for a few years and had become a joyless hermit, not wanting to see anybody or leave home. The father of the family had started an affair with somebody more lively and outgoing and had told his wife he was going to divorce her and take the two girls with him "so that they would not turn into weirdos as well" (men do have a way with words). The mother had tried to kill her husband by sticking a knife through his lung, left him bleeding on the floor and went to the sleeping daughters' room. Only the younger daughter was there, the elder (16 yrs) had sneaked out to spend the night with his boyfriend. The 12-year-old woke when her mother was slashing her throat with a long knife. She lost conscienceness and vaguely remembers their neighbour dragging her Mom off her. Her father had managed to drag himself to alert the neighbour (a long time before cell phones) who called the cops and ambulance, but rushed to the rescue as well and managed to lessen her bloodloss and saved the girl's life. Mom went to jail, Dad divorced and remarried and they lived together with wife number two. Only the girl couldn't fall asleep. She had used sleeping tablets for eight years. She had taken up some form of martial arts (can't remember which)and was very motivated and focused on it and had the second highest belt although she is very short and light. But still no sleep. When she got a dog, she was finally able to sleep, as somebody was watching over her, somebody who would wake and alert her if there was something going on. The Mom served her sentence and got out of jail. She had obviously had some councelling as well and got herself a job and a new husband from the same small town they all were living in and where everybody knew their story. The girl has visited her Mom and her new husband, they had been very civil and polite with each other, but she said she would never ever turn her back on her. She is badly scarred, but mentally a very positive, down to earth and gentle person, nothing like Lily here.
This book will travel next to Germany, where Into-the-blue has won the Tea & Mystery Sweeps.
[Edit: Into-the-Blue specifically wants cozy mysteries, so I'm not sending this to her. Niksu, however, has this on her wislist, will put it aside to wait for her.]

And now it's read. I had high expectations as Harris is one of my favourite authors, I have loved Sookie and Harper Connelly books but I should have known. I liked this very much. Partly a bit too disturbing for my taste as well but besides that very entertaining and enjoyable read. I would definitely want to read the rest of the books in this Shakespeare series.

Thanks kirjakko for fulfilling my wish.
