Reserved this online at Waterstones and then went in to collect it. Used my points card to pay for it, so got this book for free... I have just bought "Taken By Midnight" and I plan on getting the next ones through the post soon. I'm just hoping I can get them all and then send them out as another bookspiral.

After the shocking twist of an ending in the previous book, which brought excitement and something I never expected, the possibilities of this story was an open book. It wasn't until I finished this book I realised how crucial overall this story is, we needed a new enemy in this series for it to continue. And as much as I cursed Lara Adrian at the start of this book, I reckon she cursed herself as she wrote it, potential is nothing compared to how crucial this is.

We are transported 10 years into the future from the ending of the previous book, the ending which is called "First Dawn". Through diary entries of Mira, we learn how the world has changed, how it's developed and how peace is the plan for the world. This is quickly revealed in the prologue.

Thing is, I have always seen Mira as a child, yes 10 years has gone by, but it was quite the struggle to see her as this formidable warrior of the order, especially since her characterisation had changed due to the ten years that had passed and how much things had changed.

Due to this book being 10 years ahead, the characters we know and loved from all the previous books are extremely minor characters, and so another quick problem is the various new characters who pop up here and there, who we've never met or only interacted slightly with, making this book a whole different ball game.

I was actually getting confused who was who. Yes, I wasn't mixing up the three main characters, Mira and Nathan and Bowman were easily understandable. And Darion "Dare" was identifiable since Lucan didn't want his son outside on the battle field. But who were the others? Sons and daughters of the couples of the previous books. Carys shined due to her appearing quite a bit, she is the daughter of Chase and Tavia. And Rafe shined at the end as Dante and Tess' son. I'm just hoping the next book doesn't presume I know who is who, and reintroduces them, otherwise I'm going to be confused out of my head.

I loved the ending, engaging and bringing a whole new enemy to the table. Although I kind of guessed what was going on in the middle, well sort of.

I also felt there was a lot more questions from this book. Such as Dare and his research findings amongst Jenna's "memories" (the Ancient's memories). This was never explored... It needs to at least pop up in the next book.

I also felt icky reading the sex scenes between Bowman and Mira. Mira was a child in the previous books and I hadn't really adjusted her to being older when the sex scene came in, not only that but it was 3 chapters long. I lost interest in reading at that point. It just gave nothing to the story, except normalcy in a world full of fear. Which is something to be expected as that would happen in real life, so I guess I can't really knock that.

Overall a crucial book and although it fast forwarded the entire series 10 years into the future, it was needed, and I hope the pace stays the same for the next book, I definitely don't want to be blasted into the future again, not any time soon.
