Lines may divide us, but hope will unite us . . .

Nine-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas.

Bruno's friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process.

Bruno was very naive, almost unbelievingly so, but then children can have total tunnel vision, only seeing what they see. I find it difficult to believe that the son of a high ranking officer would not know what a Jew is, but then that is making an assumption that the father talks with his children, when it is possible in a time with tv and Internet that a self indulgent child can be cut off from reality.

I liked the story from the spect of an innocent child's perspective...children do see what hey want to see and often don't see the bad in things, especially if they have not had anything bad happen to themselves. I find it difficult however, to believe that his new friend would have indulged his ignorance, never become angry by it, nor said things to him hat would make him question more.

The misuse of language was irking. The plays on words do not work considering he would have been speaking in German. Overall, this is not a book that would educate the young about the holocaust as it does not discuss any of the events. It is aimed at those who already know and can sigh at Bruno's innocence.
