Laughter in the Dark

Albinus, a respectable, middle-aged man and aspiring filmmaker, abandons his wife for a lover half his age: Margot, who wants to become a movie star herself. When Albinus introduces her to Rex, an American movie producer, disaster ensues. What emerges is an elegantly sardonic and irresistibly ironic novel of desire, deceit, and deception, a curious romance set in the film world of Berlin in the 1930s.
I have to confess, it's been long enough since I last read this one that I don't recall the details of the plot (I found boarding passes from a trip I took to San Diego in 1996 tucked inside the pages). I do remember that, as usual, Nabokov delights with his mastery of language and imagery. His achievement is particularly impressive considering this is his English translation of a novel he originally wrote in Russian, with the title Kamera obscura.
And who can resist a Russian novel of desire, deceit, and deception?!
Thanks for this book relay, anavolena!
Enjoy!
