OK, this one looks fascinating - with the juxtaposition of the adorable chibi figures and the more serious subject matter...
Later: I knew some things about the nisei troops, but mostly from the perspective of those in the mainland US - the ones whose families wound up in internment camps. The contrast between the Hawaiian and mainland groups here was new to me, and added a poignant note to an already emotional situation.
The artwork was delightful, managing to be charming at some points and heartbreaking at others. And the "Big Damn Heroes" rescue of the "lost battalion" got me more than a little teary...
Marvelous little book, telling a story that's well worth remembering!
