This is a paperback book that belonged to my older brother. When in his teens/early 20s he was really into the whole "heritage" --Indian thing. I asked him 2 days ago if he wanted me to send them to him, he said he "outgrew" these books and I could give them away. So, from Tasunka Witko's collection...

Book Review:
Attis McCurtain is a mixed-blood Choctaw Indian whose return from Vietnam to his small California town initiates a chain of events involving self-discovery and the false divisions between this world and the spirit world. Mundo Morales, the Chicano cop who was Attis's best friend, and Hoey and Cole McCurtain, Attis's father and younger brother, all are forced to come to grips with who they are as mixed-blood people in modern America. At the same time they must try to solve the mystery of how Attis ended up dead in a river after his incarceration in a mental institution for the murder of his white girlfriend upon returning from Vietnam. Ghosts and Choctaw soul eaters move throughout this novel as matter-of-factly as do the living characters, assisting Cole with the search for his brother's missing body and Mundo with the search for Attis's murderer, while leading each man deeper into his own roots. A fine inaugural novel for an important new series from one of the premier publishers of works by and about Native Americans.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

oh, damn, damn, damn. i truly hate going to release a book and finding I didn't journal after reading it! And it happens far too frequently :( What happens, of course, is that starting another book is much more fun, and I tell myself I'll journal later....and I forget.....

So, although it's only been a few months since I finally got around to reading (it kinda disappeared amidst the piles), it's been too long to give specifics...I can tell you I really enjoyed reading; it was beautiful and painful, magical, and heart-touching.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

When he looked up again Tas had gone. Rising to join the others, he caught sight of something small and abandoned on the floor. "Tas you forgot your pipe." He picked it up and then saw words carved into the wood he had not seen before. Find the music, find the magic.
"Did you carve this?"
Tas did not turn. "Yes," he said, reluctantly. "I have to leave it."
"But, Tas, why?"
Tas squared his shoulders as though firming some resolve. But still he did not turn. "Because the shepherd said that it could only be used once. Thats why I can't get the pipe to play that song-or any song. I've used the magic." He took a deep breath and went on. "And he said that once I found the magic I had the pass the pipe on." he paused and then he did turn, a scamp's humor in his long brown eyes. "It's going to be a long winter. I'm going to leave it here for someone else to find."
