I'm conflicted about my review. It was a nice book overall. A lot about baseball - and you kind of knew what the ending would be. Paul's father was a hard man, and a pitcher for the Mets on the downslide of his career. Joe is a newbie rookie for the cubs, who is magical on the field. Until Paul's father throws a "beanball" ending Joe's career. Fast forward 30 years, and Paul is trying to make amends before his estranged father passes away.

This is a break from the usual Grisham story. I found it to be an excellently written and a very interesting book. Joe Castle was the greatest rookie baseball had ever seen. He hit homerun after homerun and electrified the Cub fans.
And then one day everything changed................................ A very good read!!

A behind the scenes baseball story as told by Paul Tracey, the son of Mets pitcher Warren Tracey. Warren was at the down hill side of his pro career, when he got the opportunity to pitch to Calico Joe, the wonder boy of the Chicago Cubs. Joe was setting records with his home run hits. He shattered all rookie records. In the blink of an eye, his world changed. He came up to bat that fateful day in 1973 and hit a home run. The next time up Joe took the first pitch, the second one hit him in the eye and down he went. The ambulance came and carried him away. He was never to play again. Shortly after, Warren was let go. Paul Tracey had an agenda to get his Dad to apologize to Calico Joe. He had an idea of how to get it done and you'll have to read the story to see if he succeeded. A good read!
