Fyfield, a British author, writes very atmospheric books. Along with a very well-written "couple" (he's a cop, she's a prosecutor) her villains are often fascinating, and just a tad creepy. I don't read a lot of British mysteries, but I've read Fyfield for years. NOT for the "cozy" lover (like Christie) but very readable and good.
