Okay, so I picked up yet another copy of this book for release. What can I say - it's an amazing book and I want to share it with lots of people. Book 1 of the His Dark Materials trilogy. From the back cover: It was no ordinary life for a young girl: living among scholars in the hallowed halls of Jordan College and tearing unsupervised through Oxford's motley streets on mad quests for adventure. But Lyra's greatest adventure would begin closer to home the day she heard the hushed talk of an extraordinary particle. Microscopic in size, the magical Dust - found only in the vast Arctic expanse of the North - was rumored to possess profound properties that could unite whole universes. But there were those who feared teh particle and would stop at nothing to destroy it. Catapulted into the heart of a terrible struggle, Lyra was forced to seek aid from clans, gyptians, and formidable armored bears. And as she journeyed into unbelievable danger, she had not the faintest clue that she alone was destined to win, or to lose, this more-than-mortal battle.

What a fabulous and enchanting book! I enjoyed every page. It tells the story of Lyra, a young girl who lives at a university as a ward of the scholars, in a world like a magic-realism 19th or early 20th century London with the occasional undertone of steampunk. In this world everybody has a daemon, a supernatural creature that can change into almost any animal, from a moth to a snow leopard, if its companion is a child but locks into one form when its human companion reaches adulthood. Lyra learns that her uncle, Lord Asriel, is planning a voyage to the far north to investigate a mysterious substance called Dust and its effects on people. Along the way, Lyra must dodge the fearful Oblation Board, also known as the Gobblers, who do unspeakable things to children. She gets help from the boat-dwelling Gyptians, a clan of witches, an aeronaut, and a disgraced warrior bear in her quest to deliver to Lord Asriel a device called an alethiometer - a device that reveals the truth but only if one knows how to use it (the "Golden Compass" of the title). Along the way, Lyra has numerous adventures and close calls - and also learns the shocking truth about her parentage. I am glad that I decided to read this book, and as I write this I have already plunged into the second book of the trilogy, "The Subtle Knife."

I finished this today, what a fascinating story! Once I started reading this book I really couldn't put it down. The world that Pullman has created is so magical and real that I can feel myself right there with Lyra through the entire story. I have the other two books and hopefully I can read them both soon.

WOW!! It took me awhile to get to this book, but once started, I couldn't tear myself away from it! Absolutely unique--an alternate reality both magical and gritty, a tale that enchants, captivates, and horrifies.....ooooh, I wish I had the others to start right now! Thanks so much, Sunshinedreem!
