9 out of 10

A nice simple fantasy book and a good beginning to a series. The world building was well done - I felt a sense of history with Earthsea.

From the back cover:
Ged was the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea, but once he was called Sparrowhawk, a reckless youth, hungry for power and knowledge, who tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tale of his testing , how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death's threshold to restore the balance.

I sent this book out as a bookray. It's now going to the last person on the list, so the bookray has ended. Thank you everyone for participating! [updated Jan. 15, 2005]

I just can't seem to get into this book... Maybe it's just timing... I usually like this type of story. I seem to keep getting distracted with either things I need to do or other books and keep saying "read me, read me".

I'm going to send this one on to krin511.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to try to read this one...

Finished this book sometime last week. I enjoyed it very much - especially as Ged learns the importance of treating magic carefully.

I'm halfway through already (before I even got to the computer to journal it) and love this story of a young wizards coming of age and dealing with having better than normal powers. (Move over Harry Potter, this concept existed way before you.)

I found the second book on the free shelf at the library, and plan to include it when I send this to the next person on the bookrelay.

i liked it. nothing really special but it was a nice read. i am looking forward how the story will "continue" in the second book.

I will send the 2nd book together with this one so the sending will have to wait a few more days as I hardly find enough time to read lately. Isnt it bad if u really want to read but always are too busy or tired?
Well I am trying to put in an hour every day but honestly it doesnt work every day :D

This just wasn't as engrossing as I expected, but a good read nonetheless. Also, I thought the concept of Ged's shadow was very interesting.

I will finish the Tombs of Atuan and send the two books off together to the next reader. Thanks for the opportunity to read this!

A Wizard of Earthsea is a simple story, but I felt like a lot of background existed in the author's imagination that she didn't write. As a veteran of the extremely long fantasy novel/series, the short length of the book irked me a little at first. However, it was nice to be able to read a complete fantasy story in a couple of sittings instead of a couple of months. I wish LeGuin had developed the characters a little more, but it's all a trade off. I look forward to reading the next installment of this series.

Thanks again to karendawn for this bookray. I will be sending the book on to Ixion pending receipt of an address.

Book looks nothing like the picture included about the cover. I had no books to read for two weeks and now all of a sudden I have 3 rings mailed to me at the same time. Right now this is third, but the second book is an easy read.

12/13/04 - Update: I've now started this book and will continue with the second one included in the ring.

I'm not totally sure how I feel about this book. The story is great, but I think there were times where the narration/descriptions were long and excessive. I had a hard time getting through more than 20 pages at a time - but then again, it is near Christmas and I've been a bit stressed to find Christmas presents. I've already contacted the next in line. I haven't finished the second book yet.

Ursula LeGuin has created a convincing fantasy world that you can easily get wrapped up in, and her characters are well-rounded and unpredictable. I thought the book was a little too serious though, and towards the end it got a tad redundant. Overall a good book though!

Offered on the Childrens/Young Adult bookrelay. Will be mailed to Geegal tomorrow.
