Journal Entry 1 by wingmeganhwing from Preston, Victoria Australia on Monday, December 8, 2003
"Aminatta's search for the truth that shaped both her childhood and the nation's destiny began among the country's elite and took her into the heart of rebel territory. Determined to break the silence surrounding her father's fate, she ultimately uncovered a conspiracy that penetrated the highest reaches of government and forced the nation's politicians and judiciary to confront their guilt. The Devil that Danced on the Water is a book of pain and anger and sorrow, written with tremendous dignity and beautiful precision: a remarkable and important story of Africa".
Her story comprises her memories as a child up to 10 and her subsequent investigations as a young woman into the fate of her father Mohamad Forna who was at one time Vice President of Sierra Leone.
I finished the last chapter of this book on the train on the way to work this morning. I found it very difficult not to show my emotions as I was reading.

Started it's journey today - sent to scism in SA. Hope you enjoy.
Apologies in advance to all participants - the postage will probably cost you nearly $8.
OUCH! (mental note to myself - restrict bookrings/rays I start to books weighing less than 500g)

I received this book in the mail today - yay! It looks absolutely fantastic, so I can't wait to read it. I have two more books on my TBR pile before this one, but since it's a bit of a big book, I might consider shuffling things around a bit, so that the ring keeps moving at a good pace. I plan to have it read and on it's way again by February 4.

I’ve read about 100 pages of this book, and just haven’t managed to really get into it yet. I expected that it would grab me right off the bat, since I really enjoyed books like Wild Swans and Falling Leaves, and I imagined this to be in the same vein. But somehow I don’t feel myself becoming invested in the lives of the characters. Although the stories in it are interesting, it does at times feel like a bunch of disparate tales all woven together by a common narrator. I am usually very interested in learning about cultures that differ from my own, particularly from those who have the experiences to speak with authority, but this time it hasn’t really grabbed me. Perhaps I’m just not at the right place in my life to be reading this right now? Maybe at another time I would enjoy it more, and relish it’s easy to read style and wandering narrative. I hope that one day I can return to it with fresh eyes, and really enjoy it for what it is. But for now, I think that I should send it on to the next person in the Ray so that others can enjoy it. The back cover blurb makes this book sound fantastic, so I hope others find it a more rewarding read than I have! Other BookRay participants - please don’t be put off by my comments! I’m sure that each person’s experience of the same book can vary widely, and I’ll be really interested to hear other people’s thoughts on this one.

I am posting this off to Georgie-Shaw tomorrow.

Received this in the mail on 3/2 from Scism - thanks! Have two other ring books I'm reading at present but they're not too thick and I should be able to start on this soon...

Pmed twinmaker today to get this on the road again.

Started out with a bang and really got into it, but halfway when the story turns politicly I really lost interest. Has had a lot (too much) happening IRL lately (preparing to go overseas without my DDs for the first time ever, and moving house within a month) saa I did not have the energy to put into a book that did not grab me. A shame really, cause I was looking forward to it. Perhaps when I have not got so much on my plate.

Ozdane

I enjoyed this book and read it a lot quicker than I thought I would. It's always good to broaden your horizons and Aminatta's past is certainly something she needed to confront. This is off to hathyia when I have received his/her address. Thanks for the opportunity to read.

meganh has told the Lost Book Island Resort the sad tale of another lost book. What has the post office done with this parcel? Will we ever see the book again? The Lost Book Island Resort offers this book some room and board and even some fun in the sun while waiting for the journal entry that will tell all the curious souls a tale of where this book has ended up and if it will be able to finish its bookray journey.
