This book is not as simple as the blurb on the back would have you believe. It flits from the past to the present and from character to character but is not disjointed to read. the book is described as shocking and hilarious which it is aswell as being unexpectedly erotic in places. The main character May evolves and changes throughout the book right up until its dramatic end.

I have read The Seal Wife by the same author, but felt this surpassed it. The young child May having her feet bound, arranged marrige then escape from it to life in a brothel. To marrying an Australian. May is the main and strong charecter throughout the story, serious, sadness and funny, with an ending not excepected.

Picked up at Derby Meetup on Tuesday. I started reading this book once before, and don't remember why I didn't finish it. Kathryn Harrison's 'A Thousand Orange Trees' is one of my favourite books, though, so it definitely deserves another chance!

RELEASE NOTES:
Decided it was time to get some of my long-neglected TBRs on the move again! New priorities at work mean I just don't have the time for everything I would like to read so I am releasing at Tuesday night's Derby Meet-up instead. Will leave on bookshelves at rear of pub if not picked up on the night.

Posted out today - hope you make it back this time! :)
The Binding Chair is safe and sound in SW Florida. Will read and move along very soon. Many thanks for including me in this ring.
How to describe this....to say I "enjoyed" it seems disrespectful. But it''s well written, engrossing, leaves me wanting to know more about the characters, especially May and Alice. I clicked on the link to the previous ring members comments and read the article Doveilibri included about foot binding. Wow! As much as the book describes it, you can''t really picture it. The women with these teeny, tiny feet. My goodness, I don''t see the beauty in it; and how glad I am its no longer done. I mean no disrespect.....just it is disturbing.
I''ll be PM''g AmberC for her address and will have on its way next weekend. Thank you for including me in this ring, and especially billhookbabe for rescuing this ring.

This book is on its way to AmberC in Australia tomorrow 8/25. Happy and safe travels, little book!
Waiting for me when I got home from work today.
Kept me turning the pages, but the continuing changes of points of view got a bit confusing at times.
PM'ed Totoroandmei for an address.

I have read back through the two sets of Journal Entries and the website that was placed in one JE about foot binding,asI could really "visualise" the process from the description in the book, and for me that was crucial to understand the storyline.
Essentially, this is the story of Mae who is married to a silk merchant and is his fourth wife, she flees him to a life in a Shanghai brothel, which is preferble to her married life. In 1899 she meets and marries an Australian called Arthur. The timeline does flit from past to present, which I found in part irritating, but nonetheless,I continued to read. The ending is both dramatic and unexpected.
Just about to PM Coolboxuk and then hopefully will post towards the end of the week.
