Almost Transparent Blue

In the years when rock festivals and rebellion were at their height in the West, in Tokyo, too, a defiant underclass of alienated youths was emerging onto the streets. Among those who refused to submit to the oppression of modern-day Japan were Ryu, Lilly and a weird collection of friends and hangers-on, who spent their days drifting in a haze of drugs, drink, sex and violence, spiralling towards self-destruction...

A quick read that I'm pleased is over to be honest. A tale of drugs and orgies and just not my thing to be honest. Not one of the characters seemed to have any 'pop' and I just didn't care about any of them in the end.

Oh dear, am I glad I'm finished! Really absolutely not my kind of book. Too much drugs, too many orgies, there hardly seems to be room for anything else. No sympathetic character who could make reading a bit bearable...
Thanks anyway for sharing.
PMed the next in line, lamelemon for their address. As soon as I get it, the book eill travel on.

Thank you all for sharing this book! Looks weird, but that's what I said about other books I ended up enjoying, too.
It was waiting for me last night when I returned from an almost week-long holiday back home and at the countryside. Not having to go pick it up from the post office doubles the enthusiasm :) Looks slim enough to have it traveling again at the end of the week.

I don't think I've ever read another book like this one. While it may be disturbing and very graphic, I kept reading, intrigued by how it might wrap up. It certainly sheds a new light on the idyllic image I had of Japan youth, but then again the hippie age must have been pretty similar there as well. What I particularly liked were the music references (The Doors, Pink Floyd) and what annoyed me were a few racial and sexual stereotypes. I'm left thinking of how much of this book is a true story.
Thank you all for sharing, I'm waiting for dicentragirl's address to send the book her way.

I didn't like this at all. Endless scenes of drug abuse interspersed with scenes of violence and sexual violence and descriptions of lots of things (from girls to rotting pineapple) smelling horrible. Obviously a succes de scandale when it was written, it's very much of its time, with scenes of young people lying around doing drugs and listening to the Doors.
I prefer Banana Yoshimoto.

Well, my curiosity is satisfied While this is a short book, it is not a pleasant read and I would say that it is especially less pleasant for a woman to read.
It reminded me of a French author who is also on the 1001-list, where it seems shock value trumps writing.
