The St Gemma's Hospice Shop in Wetherby had all their books on Buy One, Get One Free this morning - and they're only 50 pence each to start with! Can't be bad!
I got this copy for a BookCrossing friend who's recently discovered the delight's of Helen Dunmore's writings as I've already read it myself. Unfortunately I read it before I learnt to appreciate short stories in the way I do now, so my Journal Entry isn't too enthusiastic! Now I'm a big fan of this author, whatever she writes!

Amazon Editorial Review: "In this collection of short stories, the author takes the reader into a sensuous world of endless winters and midnight sun. As far apart as Finland, the Austrian Tyrol, and upstate New York, these stories come alive to the touch of estrangement, misunderstanding, sexuality and loss."

A parcel in my mailbox always brightens my day. This parcel had two books and three great postcards. Thank you so much Nu-Knees. You know I enjoy Helen Dunmore's books and the other looks fascinating and comes with your high praise.

Journal Entry 4 by bluenoser at Eymet, Aquitaine France on Sunday, September 1, 2013
I like some short stories, such as those written by Alice Munro, A. C. Clarke, Roald Dahl, and my daughter's short horror stories (yes, really!), but these just didn't excite me. Just because a story is only a few pages long doesn't mean it can't give you something to bite on. These stories didn't go anywhere, they didn't even seem to be heading in a definite direction.
I finished the book because I like Helen Dunmore's full length novels and this was only 180 pages long, had it been 300 pages or more I would have abandoned it unfinished. Thanks for the RABCK Nu- Knees, sorry I couldn't be more enthusiastic. I'll donate it to the next Phoenix giant book sale.
