An intriguing book set in Guyana and written from the perspective of a young Indo-Guyanese man, about the deaths of various family members. I knew very little about Guyana before I read this book and found this quite useful: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guyana

I'd like to pass this on to another bookcrosser as I know there are not many books set in Guyana - will see if there are any wishes for it first!

apologies for the confusion with this one - I'd entered it in the international VBB and then promptly forgotten. Luckily kiwiinengland chose it before it went astray!

Thanks so much for sending this to Nz Pam99. It looks like we got lucky and a surface mail parcel flew quickly half way around the world.

An intriguing story, and one which I enjoyed a great deal more than anticipated. It is an easy to read style that follows a young man looking back at his first 20 years of life and pointing out is reaction to various deaths he has observed within his family. The last chapter was a little odd...didn't understand it at all.

I must admit to not knowing anything about Guyana, and was getting confused that it might be in Asia as the family learn Hindu and make reference to Indian food.

An interesting book set in Guyana about Dalip's experiences with death. Though the storyline and setting were interesting I felt the characters lacked depth and were very two-dimensional.

I'm sorry to say that this book was too dull for me.
And I apologize for keeping it for a longer period than I should. Christmas season has made it a bit more difficult to control.
It will be sent to Poland as soon as I get NowINkA's address.

Thank you so much for sharing.
Haapy New Year to you all.

I have never been to Guyana myself but I thought this book would be an excellent opportunity for discussion with a friend of mine. However I didn't even finish it. I found author's plain style a disadvantage and Dalip's character not interesting enough to continue.

This was a condensed growing up story, I felt that if it was told with more narration it would have gained in depth. It was interesting though, but the prologue is so bad it's best to skip it, might put the reader off!

If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it.

Arrived today and I make no pretense of being the sort of patient person who waits until the proper day to open a package, especially when it was so beautifully and cleverly decorated. Kiwiinengland, this is all so amazing! THANK YOU for assembling such a festive and multi-media collection of things to eat, wear, blow up, and read.

Journal Entry 36 by JudySlump612 at Minneapolis, Minnesota USA on Monday, June 5, 2017
This felt very flat to me. I agree with Aberpeter that the characters lacked depth, especially the main character Dalip. He is apparently a good enough student to be admitted to an excellent college, but I get the sense that he's burying himself in his studies to avoid troubling interactions with his family. For example, we discover his mother kills herself - why? I was curious, but Dalip never made any attempt to find out.

Also, if there was any narrative arc to the book, I couldn't detect it. There's a collection of incidents, none of which have any consequences, until enough characters have died to satisfy the author, or justify the title. Then, that's it.

BUT, on looking Persaud up online I discovered he lived in Canada and was given awards by the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council. So now I have an extra book for the Canada Day Release Challenge. Happiness!
