What more can I say about Kurt Vonnegut other than "bizarrely interesting." This was the first book I have ever read by him and I was initially under the impression that he writes like he's off in his own world. After finishing this book I can see why. The book was coherent, and held together with proper continuity and basic logic. However, some of the thoughts he writes seem to come out of left feild. He did write in the preface to the book about his want to clear his head of all the junk in there. And it seems to appear out of nowhere in the writing of the book. But otherwise he did keep a storyline flowing from cover to cover to maintain the interest of the reader. I might have to read some of his other books before making a final judgement about his writing.

Thanks for returning this and for the journal entry--I was wondering what you thought of it. It seems that I may have read it years ago, but I'm not sure and will read it soon. You might try Cat's Cradle or his collection of short stories--Welcome to the Monkey House; I liked both of those.

loving it so far...I'm a huge Vonnegut fan...here's a little example of why: "But some of the nonsense was evil, since it concealed great crimes. For example, teachers of children in the United States of America wrote this date on the blackboard again and again, and asked children to memorize it with pride and joy: 1492 The teachers told the children that this was when their continent was discovered by human beings. Actually, millions of human beings were already living full and imaginative lives on the continent in 1492. That was simply the year in which sea pirates began to cheat and rob and kill them." Brilliant. More to come...

couldn't resist: "The driver talked about politics some. Trout couldn't tell one politician from another one. They were all formlessly enthusiastic chimpanzees to him. He wrote a story one time about an optimistic chimpanzee who became President of the United States. He called it "Hail to the Chief"." ========================================================= "Dwayne's bad chemicals made him take a loaded eight caliber revolver from under his pillow and stick it in his mouth. This was a tool whose only purpose was to make holes in human beings. In Dwayne's part of the planet, anybody who wanted one could get one down at his local hardware store. Policemen all had them. So did the criminals. So did the people caught in between." ========================================================= "Patty Keene was stupid on purpose, which was the case with most women in Midland City. The women all had big minds because they were big animals, but they did not use them much for this reason: unusual ideas could make enemies, and the women, if they were going to achieve any sort of comfort and safety, needed all the friends they could get. So, in the interests of survival, they trained themselves to be agreeing machines instead of thinking machines. All their minds had to do was to discover what other people were thinking, and then they thought that, too." ========================================================= "He was a graduate of West Point, a military academy which turned young men into homicidal maniacs for use in war." ========================================================= "Reindeer was their code word for the black maid, who was far away in the kitchen at the time. It was their code word for black people in general. It allowed them to speak of the black problem in the city, which was a big one, without giving offense to any black person who might overhear. The reindeer problem was essentially this: Nobody white had much use for black people anymore--except for the gangsters who sold the black people used cars and dope and furniture. Still, the reindeer went on reproducing. There were these useless, big black animals everywhere, and a lot of them had very bad dispositions. They were given small amounts of money every month, so they wouldn't have to steal. There was talk of giving them very cheap dope, too--to keep them listless and cheerful, and uninterested in reproduction. The Midland City Police Department, and the Midland County Sheriff's Department, were composed mainly of white men. They had racks and racks of sub-machine guns and twelve-gauge automatic shotguns for an open season on reindeer, which was bound to come. "Listen--I'm serious," said Grace to Harry. "This is the asshole of the Universe. Let's split to a condominium on Maui and LIVE for a change." So they did."

Journal Entry 15 by lostbookisland on Monday, September 25, 2006

This book has washed ashore at the Lost Book Island after not being heard from for many months. This new arrival will be shown to a room and be allowed a bit of rest before being introduced to the many fun things to do here at the island. All around there are books sipping cool drinks under shady palms while other books participate in a wide variety of beach sports. There is plenty of sand, surf and sun here for all of the lost and wayward books to enjoy. It is hoped that very soon a new journal entry will come to rescue this book from the island and send it back out into the BookCrossing world so that it may continue on its journey. It is hoped that the new journal entry will tell all the interested parties where this book has been this long time and where it will be traveling to next.
