The Montmartre Investigation by Claude Izner - ok

This is the third of the Victor Legris mysteries and whilst it was an entertaining enough read, it isn't anything special. The first of the series I found disappointing, the second (which is the one I wanted to read following a review) was much better and vindicated my original choice, this was all a bit...well...meh.

As mentioned this is the third in a series of mystery (possibly 'cosy' genre) novels set in Fin de siècle Paris featuring Victor Legris, a bookseller, and his various family and friends.

This time, a young girl is found murdered, missing her shoes. At the same time, a red shoe is delivered to Victor's book shop and is discovered to belong to his partner (and surrogate father)'s god daughter who is living in a nearby boarding school. Of course, the shoe had been borrowed by the murdered girl and, of course, Victor gets drawn in to the mystery. This time it all revolves around the new shows and clubs in Montmartre including the Moulin Rouge and all the characters that were around that scene.

Not great literature, but a pleasant enough read. If I didn't have the next two on mount TBR I wouldn't search them out, but they are not so bad as I won't get round to them at some point in the future.

I really enjoyed this third book in the Victor Legris series. I'm becoming quite fond of Joseph. Getting a bit irritated by the whole Victor / Tasha relationship, which just feels like unnecessary padding.

Thanks! I can't remember if I've been tagged or is bookfrogster merely being a generous Scot?
It says in the back cover that we are drawn into to city's nightlife and the legendary Moulin Rouge. One of our clients invited us to his 50th birthday party in Moulin Rouge a few years ago (we must be doing something right!) and you really can't say no to an invitation like that. I was surprised to see that male dancers had bigger breasts than those fit slim female dancers.... Perhaps that wasn't the case when Toulouse-Lautrec was around.

I finally picked this up from the slopes of Mnt. TBR as I felt like a wee trip to Paris, having just returned from Moscow. Back to work tomorrow, Easter should be more often.

The book seems to try to be accurate with historical details, so I wonder if Parisians really kept goats (a small herd!) in their fifth floor appartments?? I'm glad I wasn't visiting at that time. The smell of homeless people on a hot summer's morning, before the cleaners have arrived, is bad enough.

Around page 140 I decided this is too grim and sadistic for me, so I stopped reading.
