Nocturnes by Kazuo Ishiguro - ok

A collection of short stories based around music/musicians. Not bad, not great. I think the problem was I found the characters to be too self obsessed and unlikeable. No redeeming qualities and as such didn't really care about what happened to them. Other than that, they were well written and fairly interesting stories - let's face it, I read all 5 and it only took me a couple of days, so not that bad or particularly challenging. All a bit 'meh' and therefore, just ok.

Just got it!
Thanks for sharing Cassandra2020!
It's the next to be read.

Journal Entry 8 by kizmiaz at Belém , Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Monday, November 20, 2017
Well, that was unimpressive.
There's five short stories in this collection and I sort of enjoyed The Crooner and kind of liked Nocturne but both felt long just the same.
These are well written stories but they failed to grab my attention, the characters were weak, the plots barely there and the pace was just too slow for my tastes.
I'm sure it's not Ishiguro's fault, after all he just won the Nobel, but after a while reading whichever story in this book I just felt bored.
Thanks for sharing anyway Cassandra2020.
I'll pass it along soon.

Thanks for sharing!

It was not my favorite book by Kazuo Ishiguro, but still I enjoyed the quietude and simplicity of the 5 stories, all music-related.

I am very sorry for the delay in reading this book and sending it forward! It was sent last Friday to Lindasaurus. Thanks for sharing!

07.04.2018:
I finally finished this book today and it counts for efells Lesechallenge 2018.

Life's disappointments have never been chronicled in a more elegant manner. The stories feel like dreams. You close your eyes and take the journey, but just when you're about to see the summit, suddenly you're jolted awake to reality filled with a sense of disillusionment and regret.

If you enjoy slow, atmospheric stories in which nothing much happens then you'll like this collection.

I read the book in the beautiful spring days in the past weeks on my balcony! (see picture)

These short stories were ok but won't leave a lasting impression, I'm afraid. I couldn't relate to any of the narrators and I enjoyed his Buried Giant much more.

Updated Jun 27, 2018

Unlike most of the previous bookcrossers, I enjoyed this collection of short stories. I agreed with Lindasaurus as I enjoyed atmospheric stories, and this set evoke a lingering sense of regret and disillusionment.

The book will continue on its journey to the next reader in the bookray soon.

The book has arrived in sunny San Diego -- thanks mcsar! I already read and enjoyed the first story, "Crooner". I will get it moving as soon as I can.

I enjoyed this compilation of five somewhat interconnected short stories from this great author. The stories were a bit odd and quirky. I think the one that sticks with me the most is the one that takes place in the fancy hotel in which some famous and not-so-famous patients are recovering from plastic surgery. Very odd, but funny and poignant also.

I'm the last reader on the list, since BookLovinMama asked to be skipped. Posted it back on the Bookray forum list and 3 more people signed on:

It took me a little bit to get into this collection, but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Like Judygreeneyes before me, I really enjoyed the story about the musician recovering from plastic surgery. I think it and the last story Nocturnes were my favorites, although I enjoyed all of them at least a little bit. I will be PM-ing the next recipient and trying to get this in the mail soon.

Journal Entry 22 by tagesmann at Rotherham, South Yorkshire United Kingdom on Thursday, December 13, 2018
Arrived yesterday

Journal Entry 23 by tagesmann at Kiveton Park, South Yorkshire United Kingdom on Thursday, January 10, 2019
Not a bad collection. Some strong, interesting and punchy stories. I do like short stories that leave you wanting more, but where you don't need any more for the story to be complete in iteslef. Very clever.

Are you sure you want to delete this item? It cannot be undone.
