New hardcover. Debut novel of a promising Japanese-born writer. East-meets-west theme. Takes place in 19th century Japan.

Excerpt from one review:
This is a world where samurai are honorable even in betrayal, the geisha are beautiful even when deadly, and the Americans are ugly and uncouth. There are lots of battles, statesmanlike wisdom, beheadings, tolerance, prejudice, East learning from the West, West learning to appreciate the East, bowing and shaking of hands, inscrutability and openness, good and evil, karma and free will: just what you would expect and undoubtedly want in a book of this sort.

9 out of 10

This has become one of my favourite books, it is a gripping tale from first to last, set in 19th century Japan. Japan is in trouble, civil war is upon them between the various Great Lords and their clans, Japan is fighting too against the outsiders who not content with sending their own christian missionaries to the country, have now sent thier war ships. In this book we follow the trials of Lord Genji Okumichi has he strives to protect his own domain at the hands of his enemies, Genji's uncle, Lord Shigeru has to be one of the best charcters i've come across in a book, and the book is well worth a read on the basis of this secondary character.
To sum up this book i would say it is a nice blend of "The Godfather" meets "Ivanhoe"

And now i await Matsuoka's next novel which i believe is a continuation of this story.
