I've been intrigued by the anime series since I first read about it on its TV Tropes page, and when I saw this manga volume, based on the anime, at the local Barnes and Noble, I had to buy it. The story's about a world in which superheros basically work for a reality-TV network, fighting crime and gaining sponsorship. The main character, Wild Tiger, is an experienced hero, but his ratings have been slipping; cue the arrival of a rookie-with-attitude who's assigned to be the Tiger's teammate - if only they can avoid murdering each other...

It's a cute concept, with some of the heroes valuing the celebrity and prizes more, while others (notably, Kotetsu/Wild Tiger) really, really want to help people, with the fame and points coming second. Wild Tiger also has a tendency to cause a LOT of property damage in the process of stopping crime, so even when he does earn prizes most of it goes to repairing the damage.

Each hero's power is different, with a lot of variety in their abilities. Wild Tiger can become immensely super-strong/fast/etc. - but only for five minutes, which requires some strategy on his part. And then comes his new partner Barnaby, who has the same ability... rival, much? Kotetsu also has a daughter to look after, with some amusing conflicts between attending her school events and fighting crime.

There's a rather surprising storyline involving gigantic statues that start moving - and which has a heart-warming wrap-up that says a lot about how some of the superheroes regard their powers. Banter, action, humor, and hints of mysterious backgrounds - nice start!
