I read this book for our Orangeview Staff/Faculty Book Club. I had avoided it for years, because I was sick of hearing about how great it is from nearly everyone I know, mostly adults. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised, and enjoyed it. I read it in one sitting. I was pleased to see that Count Olaf is truly brutal, at one point hitting Klaus, and then later threatening to drop the baby, Sunny, from a high tower to her death. And I liked how, at the end, he hisses to Violet that after he gets their fortune, he'll KILL them. For the gimmick of this series to work, the villain would have to be truly villainous, and the events very unfortunate, otherwise it would come off twee and pretentious. The subplot with the mysterious Beatrice is only hinted at in this book, but I'm intrigued. I wouldn't say this is the best children's book I've read, but it was a fun diversion. I think Lemony Snicket, AKA Daniel Handler, is clearly one of the many in the cute/creepy genre who is VERY influenced by the works of Edward Gorey. If you like Lemony Snicket, do yourself a favor and find one of Gorey's "Amphigorey" collections of his comic stories, particularly "The Hapless Child."

This book was a wonderful, quick read. I tried to not like it, but got "caught" immediately on a Saturday morning and finished it. I could not put it down. The characters were well done, and you found yourself saying WHAT'S NEXT. I am definately ready for the next book. This one I will pass on to a student. I have already purchased another copy for my granddaughter.

I read this book because our librarian chose it for us to read. Normally, I don't enjoy kid's books, but this one wasn't that bad. The author's warnings on the back cover kind of put me off, but since I was on Winter Break at my parent's house, I didn't have many choices of reading materials. So, I finished it. What impressed me the most regarding the children was their perseverance in dealing with their horrible situation. Kids in my classes seem to like the books; I guess many of them can relate.
