"Far from the Madding Crowd" is the most pastoral of Hardy's Wessex novels. It tells of the young farmer Gabriel Oak and his pursuit of the elusive Bathsheba Everdene, whose wayward nature leads her to both tragedy and true love.

The background to this compelling story is the majesty of the Wessex countryside in all its moods, making it one of the most English of great English novels.

**************

I love Hardy's novels and this is one of my favourites. Now happy to be passing on - I hope you enjoy it, earthcaroleanne :)

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I really hope this book helps you in your prep for the OU course, earthcaroleanne. And more than that, I hope this book helps you to develop a taste for Hardy's other books. "Far From the Madding Crowd" was the stepping stone I needed to discover his other works, some of which I really love and I would be so happy to hear you had the same experience as me :)

This arrived at the weekend. Thanks so much for help me out with this. I do have other Hardy books so maybe this will make me get around to reading them.

Have struggled through a couple of other books for my course (especially Dickens) so I am pleased to say I enjoyed this. I even found it quite exciting later on and I had to get off my bus five pages from the end - not allowed!
