The metal plates on the cover
make nice noice, don’t they?
Things of metal feel hard and cool.

Sponge is very soft.
It is made of foamed plastic.
You use it when you wash yourself.
Or do you rather use a flannel
or a washing cloth?
***
The sponge is so soft that it would soon be torn to pieces by small hands or teeth. It had to be covered with something - thin fabric was used here.

This mat is also made of soft plastic.

to prevent slipping.

This kind of plastic net
is used in windows in the summer.
Then flies, mosquitos and other bugs
can’t get inside the house
to tickle or sting people.

***
You can lift the net and touch the plastic fly behind it. The fly is sewn fast to the fabric.

In many countries children
play with marbles.
Marbles are usually made of stone,
but these are made of glass.
The bag for marbles is really
a onion bag crocheted
of cotton thread.
***
You can swing the bag and hear the marbles click.

THINGS (in Finnish TAVAROITA)

This kind of plastic covered table cloth
is very practical in families with children.
Small accidents can be wiped away easily.
Dust bunnies are hiding
under cupboards, tables and beds.
You can get rid of them
using a vacuum cleaner.
***
The table cloth is sewn fast at two sides only. You can put your hand underneath and feel something soft hidden there.

This “tongue of a bear” is used
for cleaning pots and pans.
It is called that way because
it isvery rough.
Cats have also a rough tongue.
They clean their fur by licking.
This “tongue of a bear” is cut
into the shape of a spruce.
If you touch a spruce,
it feels rather rough
or even prickly.
***
The spruce is sewn fast only in the middle there the stem would be.

THINGS (in Finnish TAVAROITA)
You can make many kind of things
of wood: houses, boats, furniture
and small things like toys.
Bobbins used to be wooden, too,
but not anymore.
Now they are made of plastic.
This wooden toy car feels hard
and smooth but not cool.
***
You can take the wooden things into your hand.
