Complex book. This is the story of a young man growing up in Germany in the wake of WWII. As a schoolboy (15 years old) he enters into a relationship with an older woman, Hanna. He slowly matures beyond this innappropriate entanglement, only to be caught up in the society's examination of guilt and complicity in the war.

And then his inner roof falls in as he goes from abstract what if examinations of his own complicity to the realization that his Hanna has been put on trial as a prison guard.

The novel is rather removed and passive, the only real action in his relationship with Hanna is the novels he reads to her, he is the reader, can he be held responsible? But why is he reading? And why are we, the book's readers reading? An unsettling book on a difficult topic. I kept thinking of America's history of race and wondering when we will start to be the readers.
