Bought in one of the those pesky two for one deals at the local supermarket - mainly as I wanted the other book :) This does look good though.

I came into this novel with absolutely no idea of the storyline or characters, with no awareness of the authors or the film, so with no expectations at all. But I was pleasantly surprised.
The story is not hugely original - boy meets girl, finds out she's a Castor, has to help her make the choice between good and evil on her birthday. But there were enough original little tweaks and ideas to make it worth reading. I loved the Southern setting and the background of the Civil War enthusiasts, and the idea of the 'other' library was just great. A sprinkling of voodoo as well - what more could you want.
I am not a huge fan of first person narrative, which I always feels makes any other character a bit two dimensional, but it worked ok here. The sudden shift to Lena's point of view towards the end was a bit annoying, but understandable. The action was fast-paced enough to keep from being bored and I really enjoyed the last few chapters as it raced towards the end. However, a few niggles with the ending spoilt it - I'd like to think they will be addressed in the next books, which I will definitely be keeping an eye out for in the future.
