Not laugh-out-loud funny, but certainly empathetic-chuckle funny! As the blurb says, it is the book that all those Inter-Railers wish they'd written. At least, all those British Inter-Railers. Is Bill Bryson now more British than the Brits? The tale jogs along at a lively pace and (obviously) he's missed out the boring bits and maintains a high level of entertainment and self-deprecation through it all. It does skid to rather an abrupt halt, but you can understand why (as his home-sickness swings in). It reminds me of when I Inter-Railed to Istanbul... ah, the Polish coffee-smugglers in Hungary, the posh hotel in Constanca where they chucked a man out of his room so we could have it, and the blackmailing train conductors in Bulgaria...

Thank you to whoever left the book in the waiting room in Leatherhead train station. I'm now in the middle of reading it on my long trip home, remembering trips to Europe of old.
