It had moments of very good writing. But....what "plot" existed moved at a snail's pace. In virtually every chapter, the reader has to think of where they are. I kept trying to figure out where thehistory of North Carolina fit in. I didn't seem like it belonged. I was waiting for a connection to the story. Dialog is interrupted at different points after each word by Linda tastes words written in italics. I found it incredibly annoying as a reader and can't imagine what it would be like to live with such a condition. I got the point very quickly that Linda is different, but her synesthesia had very little to do with what happened, and she never really emerged as a fully fleshed-out character. Her parents, relatives, friends, and lovers were even less substantial. There were several surprises, but I found that I didn't care that much about the secrets of the past, nor what happened when they came to light.
