A wonderfully readable book that, if I were not sharing, I'd read again. There are three stories involving four main characters. The stories are tenuously connected but otherwise could stand on their own and they do. Each chapter of the book focuses on one of the stories with time and place shifting chronologically within each story but not within the book as a whole. This three stories making up a novel struck me as odd and I idly wondered if the whole thing should really be called a novel or not. I say idly because I don't really care what we call the book, I enjoyed every minute of it.

In Montreal in 1996, Grace, a therapist, is out skiing one day and comes across a man, Tug, who has just failed to kill himself (by hanging- she sees the noose around his neck) lying in the snow. She feels the need to help him whether he wants her help or not and ultimately, she wants a relationship with Tug.
In New York, in 2002, we find Annie, a former patient of Grace (her professional parents had sent her as the thing to do for a messed up kid), now living on her own and attempting to be an actress.
We find Mitch, also a therapist and Grace's former husband of umpteen years, remarried to a woman with whom he's madly in love, but for some reason, in 2006 he decides to work far away from her, providing therapy to the inhabitants of Iqaluit.

These stories were fascinating to me as they raised questions about whether we can ever really help anyone, ever really know anyone; the risks and consequences of letting or not letting anyone get inside.

A Giller Prize Finalist and deservedly so.
