Great movie. Pretty good book.
I was disturbed by the close simularities to the out of print Battle Royale manga series, which once a year pits a high school class against itself in a televised game to the death in a dark future and provides bread and circus to the crowds to keep them under control. The winner was the last one standing. Other than that, interesting idea.
My brother also pointed out that having the book narrated in the simple present by Catniss was also a problem. Much complexity was lost. Luckily the movie was good enough to recover some of that. I enjoyed it, and will read the sequels, but thought it pertinant to discuss similarities.
