I quite enjoyed this dysptopian YA novel - different than The Hunger Games, but stands as well. Definitely a bit of a commentary on the petroleum industry. I liked it and almost wish there was a darker, grittier version for grown ups.

Book Description from Chapters.ca:
A gritty, high-stakes adventure set in a futuristic world where oil is scarce, but loyalty is scarcer.

In America''s Gulf Coast region, grounded oil tankers are being broken down for parts by crews of young people. Nailer, a teenage boy, works the light crew, scavenging for copper wiring just to make quota-and hopefully live to see another day. But when, by luck or by chance, he discovers an exquisite clipper ship beached during a recent hurricane, Nailer faces the most important decision of his life: Strip the ship for all it''s worth or rescue its lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who could lead him to a better life....

In this powerful novel, Paolo Bacigalupi delivers a thrilling, fast-paced adventure set in a vivid and raw, uncertain future

I liked this one too and I read it fast. I was a bit confused as I didn't realize at first that it was in the future. Drowned cities was interesting too as that is pretty much happening to New Orleans already. The clippers were very interesting too. Electronic controls of sails. hmm interesting concept with combined hydrofoils. I think I know who I will be forwarding this onto. She likes to read award winning books. Not sure if this is one of the award lists she follows. Also, I think I will have to see if the library has the sequel novel. Haven't read much YA books of late but this seems a bit further afield than normal for YA.

This book has the National Book Award Finalist seal and the American Library Association Award for Excellence in Young Adult literature.

Received 9/19 as a RABCK from froggie66 - thank you very much! As usual, Mount TBR is quite large, but this will be added near the top of the pile.

Excellent stuff. Nailer is quite a kid and his world is fascinating. I'll be keeping an eye out for The Drowned Cities...
