Timeless (The Parasol Protectorate, No. 5)

Lord and Lady Maccon have a new challenge on their hands: parenthood, made more complex by the fact that legally Akaldama is the adoptive parent and little Prudence's shapeshifting abilities. Still, when summoned by an elderly, powerful vampire, they have no choice to pack up their household and go on a journey to Egypt.
I had trouble getting into this book, despite my enjoyment of the series. The author set this book some years after the last one, which was an unexpected change in format and prevented the reader from getting to see how some of the knots at the end of the fourth got worked out. For me the biggest disappointment of this time-shift was not getting to see how Akaldama and Biffy made out. At the end of the fourth they seemed determined to try and make a go of it; here they have been separated for years and are looking for new lovers. It feels a bit jolting not to have seen what caused their relationship's failure. There are a few other incidents like this one that make me wish we could have had a book between this one and the previous.
Carriger's writing is sharp and witty as ever, and the adventurous style of the story reminds me of Changeless which I liked best in the series.
