The premise of this book is quite interesting. A married couple, living alone as lighthouse keepers in the 1920s, discover a small boat that has run aground on their island. In the boat is a dead man and a live baby. Of course, what happens to everyone involved is the plot of the book. A dead man with a baby in a rowboat? Where's the mother? If the man is dead, why isn't the baby? Then, what to do, especially since the couple has experienced several miscarriages and is childless? These questions sucked me in quickly and I was very interested in how this plot would play out.

The human condition is very complicated, as we all know. This story captured the complexities and lines between love and hate, good and bad, right and wrong. Intriguing enough to compel the reader to consider the various moral dillemas from different perspectives and question what you would do in a similar situation.

The book was safely waiting for me at home with my husband along with a few BC books when I came back from a holiday on the nearby sea-shore. Thanks a lot valpete !

Sorry for the delay and thank you valpete for your patience and your PM.
I had been busy with grandchildren, holidays and organizing a tour by coach to Portugal for my association which I lead. It's over now, eveybody happy and I have some times before the big summer holidays (children, grandchildren, etc...) in July !

So I read this book. It's deeply moving and I can't make my mind about the concerned characters. So sad but I loved every page.

Thanks for sharing valpete.

I enjoyed this book. It had a very unique, interesting story. Sorry for taking so long with it. I actually finished it a while ago, but have very little computer access now that it is difficult for me to journal etc. Waiting for an address to send it on to the next person.

This book went missing for a few months (just after the time I was trying to get a hold of Ravencat-who declined the book and PerryFran). Just when it looked like I was faced with replacing it, it showed up in the hands of my mother. I guess I lent it to her without realizing what book she had taken.

Now on it's way to PerryFran.

I was really moved by this excellent first novel from M.L. Stedman and will be anxious to see what she comes up with as a followup. This story is about a young couple in the 1920's who serve on a lighthouse off the coast of Australia. The wife experienced 3 miscarriages and when a baby miraculously shows up on the island, the couple decides to raise her as their own (against the better judgment of the husband). This bad choice leads to some serious consequences 4 years later when it is discovered that the child's mother is still alive. A very emotionally charged novel that I would highly recommend!

I found it interesting that almost every character in this story had either lost a child or lost a mother or both. Some found their own strength, some were devastated; some used that loss to empathize with others, others were drawn into themselves. Our relationships and losses thereof shape us, but we have choices to make on how we allow them to shape us.

Bookray started by ValPete; The title refers to the lighthouse on Janus Island, which is situated between the Indian and Southern Oceans off the SW coast of Australia. Tom returns from WWI, and takes up the solitary job of lighthouse keeper. He meets Isabel during a leave & marries her. After multiple miscarriages and a stillbirth, a boat with a dead father and a live infant washes up on the lighthouse shore. In their isolation, they decide to keep the baby as their own, assuming she's a foundling. But when they get shore leave a few years later, they find that the mother is still alive, and grieving terribly. But against Tom's judgment, Isabel convinces him to stay quiet. But he leaves a note for the mother, starting a chain of events that's devastating to both families and others in the community. The story is very powerful throughout, until the ending, which while nice & what the reader wants, doesn't do the book justice.

This will continue on in a bookbox.
