The Parasol Protectorate, part 1.
Alexia Tarabotti has no soul. She's also a spinster, whose father was Italian. As if that's not enough, one day she gets bitten by a vampire who thus breaks all the standards of social etiquette. Alexia accidentally manages to kill the vampire with her trusted parasol, and Lord Maccon - a werewolf Alexia can't stand - is sent to investigate. Everything just goes downhill from there, and Alexia must find out what's really happening among London's supernaturals.
The book is fun to read although there are a lot of complicated words in it and the reading is slow. Carriger's steampunk fantasy works well and Alexia Tarabotti is an interesting character. I'd like to read more about her in the future.

I'm afraid I won't be able to take home half the great books I picked up tonight, but this made the short-list and has at least accompanied me to my B&B in Barnes.
I actually read this a couple of years ago and quite liked it (in a fluffy sort of way), but then gave it to a friend. It's been on my wishlist for a while now because I thought I'd like to (re-)read the whole series.

Steampunk urban fantasy set in Victorian England? How could I resist! Thanks Kris! :D
