Gerald Durrell went to Mauritius to save endagered animal species from extinction. He collected (resued) some of them and took them to Jersey, to his sanctuary, from where their progeny would eventually be taken back to their home land.

I enjoyed the descriptions of the animals and natural phenomena in these amazing islands, although I did wince at the rather colonial descriptions of the people (locals are simple, happy and "chocolate-coloured", oh dear... ) - still, he's a naturalist and a zoologist, and that's the main focus of the book.
