I found this fair-condition trade paperback at the Used Book Superstore, and thought it looked interesting - not to mention that I've always been fond of the "ranger" archetype, whether from Lord of the Rings or in Dungeons and Dragons games {wry grin}.
Later: Very entertaining! The story opens with the ominously-named Morgarath building armies of deadly creatures, to be unleashed upon the world very soon now... Then we switch to young Will's viewpoint, as he faces the Choosing - a selection of apprentices by masters of various skills. He wants to become a warrior, but he's rejected as too small; then, one after another, his other choices refuse him. (If we didn't already know where he'd end up, from the title of the book, we'd be worried for him - but *he* doesn't know, and has a rough time of it.)
Since this is the first book of the series, it includes a lot of training and back-story, setting up the world Will lives in, the mystery of his birth, and sundry myths and rumors as well. And eventually Will must test his new skills in a deadly battle against terrifying foes...
[The TV Tropes page for the series has some entertaining info, but do beware of spoilers if you haven't read the books yet.]

I'm adding this to the Teen bookbox, which will be on its way to its next stop soon. Hope someone enjoys this!
JennyC1230's Shrinking Teens Bookbox had lots of interesting-sounding goodies; this is one of them. Thanks Gory!
I notice that this is one of the 2014 World Book Night picks, although not one of those special copies.
Here's another copy on my shelf.
