The book chronicles both the life of Oscar de Leon, an overweight Dominican boy growing up in Paterson, New Jersey who is obsessed with science fiction and fantasy novels and with falling in love, as well as the curse that has plagued his family for generations.

Di ISBN ist nicht richtig. Das Buch schon.

I haven´t read a book for the Dominican Republic, yet, so I´m going to keep this one until I finished reading it.

07.06.13: It was hard work, sometimes, reading this book. Mostly because I don't speak the tiniest bit of Spanish. Sometimes the story was confusing, too. I didn't like the rough language and don't think it has to be super- macho all the time, to make a good book. I think the only reason for the Pulitzer Prize was the historical part. I've been to the Dominican Republic in 1999 and knew some of the described things and places. But I didn't know all the dictator- stuff. I believe they kept the tourists away from it a bit. Many women (and men, too) were still selling their bodys there, you hardly could go somewhere in the evening without the offers. The poverty was overwhelming, too. Mainly not at the tourist places, but at the inland, we drove through to get to Samana.

Read for the 1 Year= 1 Land Challenge for the Dominican Republic.

As there is a German version of this book, I'm going to take this one with me to Scotland in July.
