1997 Scott O'Dell Award winner: ex-library hardcover with dust jacket.

Jip has grown up hearing the story of how he fell of a wagon on the West Hill Road...and how the wagon failed to come back for him. Since he has no family, he lives on the town poor farm and helps keep it running.

Then Jip's life starts changing: he befriends a lunatic who sometimes needs to be shut up in a cage, he starts going to school, and he encounters an unsavory stranger who seems to know something about Jip's past.

With the help of his Teacher and her Quaker friend Luke, Jip learns some of the answers to his own story..and how those answers will change his life.

I was pleased to see the reappearance of one of my favorite Katherine Paterson characters in this book. :)

This is book 13/59 for NancyNova's 2013-2014 US states & territories reading challenge (Vermont).
