Damon Galgut established himself as a writer of international caliber with the publication of The Good Doctor, which was sold in sixteen countries and was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and the winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize for the African region. The Quarry, written ten years ago but never published outside of South Africa, is another stark, intense, and crystalline novel in which human nature betrays itself against the desolate backdrop of rural South Africa.
I have enjoyed this South African writer previously having read The Good Doctor and In A Strange Room so picked this up from my shelf after reading a review from one of my favourite bloggers. It is a short read with chapters only a few pages long which enhanced the spare prose and short sentences. There is a real immediacy to the writing with a race for the local police chief who is in pursuit of the fugitive with themes exploring murder and assumed identity. Very atmospheric and the quarry is both place and a main plot element.

Very short, very tense, and a very stark and minimalistic style of writing. I can almost 'get' what Galgut is trying to achieve here, but personally I would have preferred a little more character development and emotional tone.

I felt like if I was watching a Hitchcock movie, while reading this book. Everything was so enigmatic. And the short sentences and small chapters made it even more intriguing. I truly enjoyed reading this book and the way it ends, although I suppose you will never get to know who the main character was.
The book was sent to sakirmo yesterday (the 18th) after the "wish list tag game".
Happy travels!
Enjoy :-)

Well, this was quite a strange book... I've enjoyed a couple others by Galgut but this one, after a promising start, I lost interest in unfortunately. Thanks to those short chapters I managed to finish it, but was left feeling mostly 'meh' about the story.
