The Hobbit
2 journalers for this copy...
The first chapter with the frolicking dwarfs is by far my favourite; hilarious and a real slapstick. After that, humour becomes sparse and the serious side of adventure begins: danger, loss and lots of fighting ... fortunately not so much as in the Ring Trilogy. That is, the big battle takes place anyway, but not over so many pages. I'm glad, since I'm rather bored with big battles. I suspect that Tolkien wrote this story for boys. When I think of it: not one woman appears in the whole book! At least I don't remember one.
I've read it the second time and was again horrified about the many ponies who had to die. Very sad. I'm also a bit squeamish when it comes to the slaying of dragons, those ancient, majestic and actually adorable creatures. Where are the dragons today? Not one remained ... But well, there has always to be a baddie.
It's quite rough and manly stuff, but a wonderful classic which nobody should miss. This (out of print) copy has even an original drawing by Tolkien on the cover. His dragon looks not dangerous, not a bit :D

That was a real pleasure to re-read this book.
I still love this amazing world, love those Hobbits and their lifes.
Once again, I have been completely swallowed by this history and I had a good time.
