I read this book in Spanish to practice my language skills, and for that Muerto Hasta el Anochecer was great. I learned a lot. :) I do think the translation lacked something of the original, and I did stumble upon a couple of mistranslations (I sometimes compared this to the English original), so I think I prefer reading this series in the original language. This book is now free to continue on its journey.

I originally read this book as part of a bookray. Here's a link to that copy of the book.

Here's my review (written September 10, 2006):
It took me a long time to get to this book (too many bookrings coming in all the time), but when I finally did, I couldn't put it down, and finished it in two days.

I loved this book a lot - I think the Southern setting was very well done, although somebody who actually lives there would have to confirm this... But for an outsider, it felt very real. I also loved Sookie as a main character, and I could completely understand why she felt insecure about her "disability" and otherwise. Fortunately she wasn't one of those whiny characters with no backbone, on the contrary.

I've read a lot of vampire books recently, and this was a welcome change. I found Bill's and Sookie's relationship to be really heartwarming, because it felt real. Also, I found the gradual deepening of the relationship much more erotic than reading about a couple who instantly lusts after each other and then proceeds to have sex... I guess for me subtlety is the key; many authors overdo it by writing pages about how sexy someone is.

The murder mystery was really well done too, and I had no idea how it would turn out. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series! This book will definitely go into my permanent collection.

My review from January 20, 2013:
I reread this book, and noticed that I had forgotten everything that happened in the book in the 6 years since I last read it. :) I didn't like it as much this time. I do love the way Charlaine Harris writes, but I wasn't as impressed with the vampire part. I remember last time I really loved the chemistry between Bill and Sookie, but this time I didn't feel it. Instead I was bothered by the vampire politics. I can't stand it that Eric can order Sookie and Bill around and they have no say in the matter. Also, I didn't like the rapey aspects of the story, and because of that I couldn't really be happy for Bill and Sookie. I do have several of the books in the series on my shelf, so I guess I'll read those and see where this is going.
