Ann Holmes is a fragile, pill-popping teenaged runaway who receives a visitation from the Virgin Mary one morning while picking mushrooms in the woods of North Fork, Washington. In the ensuing days the miracle recurs, and the declining logging town becomes the site of a pilgrimage of the faithful and desperate.
As these people flock to Ann—and as Ann herself is drawn more deeply into what is either holiness or madness...

It's a couple of days since I finished this book & while I quite liked it while reading it, I now feel a bit dissatisfied with it.
First & foremost I found the lack of speech marks very irritating! What was all that about? Unnecessary IMHO.
As for the characters themselves, well they were a bit clichéd, especially Ann herself & I didn't find any of them very likeable. Father Collins intentions were always a bit blurred to me. Carolyn had at least some credibility. Yes she was in it for what she could get but at least didn't kid herself otherwise.
I found the ending disappointing - maybe I was hoping it would all be "real" but no, it was all due to Ann's illness....no actual sighting of the Virgin Mary occurred, well I guess I shouldn't have been surprised....& it was all one big "phenathol trip". Ann's constant popping of this drug caused her muscle spams, trembling & hallucinations....but why would it cause her to see the Virgin Mary & in only that place? For a specific number of times? And what was the huge necessity to build the church?
I guess Ann had the last laugh though as the church got built.
