1968. The year Paris takes to the streets. The year Martin Luther King loses his life for a dream. The year Eleanor Maud Portman is born. Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God.

In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, one bright morning when a single, earth-shattering event threatens to destroy their bond forever.

Spanning four decades and moving between suburban Essex, the wild coast of Cornwall and the streets of New York, this is a story about childhood, eccentricity, the darker side of love and sex, the pull and power of family ties, loss and life. More than anything, it's a story about love in all its forms.

I've been meaning to read this for ages, so I was very pleased to get my hands on a copy at the bookcrossing convention yesterday, thanks Plum-crazy!

I didn't really like this as much as I expected to, I'm afraid. I liked the style of the writing, which seemed sort of dreamy, and I liked seeing the relationships panning out over the years. But the amount of plot was just ludicrous. It felt like the author wanted to explore ordinary human relationships but didn't trust that the book was interesting enough so kept throwing more and more huge life-changing events into the mix. It could have been great if less happened, in my opinion. Thanks for passing it on though Plum-crazy, I'm glad I read it.

It has taken me a while to get to this (so many books, so little time), but I have now finished it. Hmmmmm, I enjoyed the first third of this book and it seemed to be chugging along quite nicely but I then stalled in the middle and lost interest and the book languished on the table for a couple of weeks. I decided to press on with it as I had really got too far on to abandon and found myself enjoying the last third of the book. I quite liked the backdrop of real events and the characters are quite good. It does feel a bit as if the author has thrown everything bar the kitchen sink at it in terms of the plot, and the overall feel was slightly on the sentimental side for my taste but overall quite a nice read. Will wild release this next time I'm out and about somewhere interesting, I'm visiting Norfolk in a few weeks so I might take this out of Yorkshire.

Very open, easy style of writing.

Too much happens to the character and her family/friends. If it can be imagined - it is in the book. However, so what?!

Enjoyed the journey. Finished the book. Do not tend to finish books that I am not enjoying. Would I recommend the book? -Yes.

I am going to release this book in the foyer of The Light Cinema, New Brighton, Wallasey, Merseyside today. Monday 2nd May 2016 http://newbrighton.lightcinemas.co.uk/info/map
