A paperback purchased together with some other wishlist books from an online store a couple of years ago. I am interested in this mystery series as I would love to visit Shetland some day.

A paperback by Pan Books, 2006, 376 pages.

Synopsis:

" It is a cold January morning and Shetland lies buried beneath a deep layer of snow. Trudging home, Fran Hunter's eye is drawn to a vivid splash of colour on the white ground, ravens circling above. It is the strangled body of her teenage neighbour Catherine Ross. As Fran opens her mouth to scream, the ravens continue their deadly dance ...The locals on the quiet island stubbornly focus their gaze on one man - loner and simpleton Magnus Tait. But when police insist on opening out the investigation a veil of suspicion and fear is thrown over the entire community. For the first time in years, Catherine's neighbours nervously lock their doors, whilst a killer lives on in their midst..."

One of my traveling dreams put into literature, it was wonderful to read this thriller set on the Shetland Islands. The book made me to pick up the map and make more research about the separate islands, the villages and the ferry connections there :).

This was my first book from the Shetland Island Quartet, really an enjoyable and skillfully plotted thriller. Fresh feeling to read a story not taking place in a big city but instead in isolated island environment where you would believe nothing can stay as a secret from the community. Compared to this, Cleeves managed to hold a remarkable underlying tension throughout the whole book keeping the reader guessing all the time.

I liked the somewhat dark mood of the book and felt the characters were believable and personal. Police characters had their own interesting backgrounds, making them very humanly incomplete and not heroic. Raven Black left me wishing for more so I am happy I do have another thriller by Cleeves waiting on my shelf.

Oh yes, I enjoyed this a lot (and have the second part of series waiting!). Visiting Scottish islands has been a dream of mine too, and reading this didn't help... I want to go there!

I liked the characters in this book a lot and can't wait to see what happes to Perez and the rest next. And the story was good too, bit dark, but also realistic.

Sending to Boekentrol now as a Wishlist tag- game book.

Finally I got round to reading this book.
Liked it lots, the way the story was told, the setting, Perez and his crew.
It was one of few books in this genre where the outcome caught me by surprise.
In hindsight I could have known of course, but the storylines were carefully placed and not screaming out the outcome.
This certainly made me want to read the next book in line!
