This is a thoughtful book about the strains that families go through during break ups and joinings together. Elizabeth's life is totally altered when she meets Tom and takes on his son Rufus. Rufus's mother Josie has just married Matthew, who has three older children with his first wife Nadine. Nadine cannot cope with the children on her own and is resentful of their father leaving. The story follows the lives of all of these people as they cope with the changes in them.
This book is really special to me as the person with the sign saying 'Beware the agapanthus' on their gate (p 25) is my Grandmother. It was a family in-joke. Joanna Trollope lives in the same county my Grandmother lived in and must have seen it.
